A Love Story on Main Street: A Disneyland Memory That Stays With Me
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I thought sharing a story from my old blog, Tales of a Disneyland Cast Member, would be appropriate. When I worked at the front desk of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, I had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people—each with exceptional stories. Some were magical, some were heartwarming, and a few have stayed with me long after my time at Disneyland.
This is one of those stories.
It’s a story about love, nostalgia, and the little moments that make life—and Disneyland—so special. Enjoy.
A Main Street Kiss
Disneyland is made up of countless little details that make it magical. It’s the sound of a train whistle in the distance, the sweet scent of caramel drifting down Main Street, and the gentle hum of Jungle Cruise boats leaving the dock. It’s the way the sunlight catches the freshly planted flowers surrounding the statue of Walt and Mickey. Just like in life, it’s often the small things that matter most.
I truly understood this when I met James and Betty.
It was a bright morning when I first saw James. As usual, I was tending to the lobby when I noticed him standing across the room. Something about his expression told me he had a lot on his mind, so I approached him and asked if I could help. He introduced himself, and soon we were deep in conversation. After a while, he thanked me and went on his way.
The next day, James returned. I greeted him, and we chatted for a few minutes before he hesitantly asked, “Do you know where I could get a ticket to Disneyland for just a few hours?” I explained that the park only sold full-day tickets, and he nodded, seeming lost in thought. Before we could continue talking, his phone rang, and he left.
The following day, I saw him again. This time, he walked up to me and asked if I could help him buy two tickets. As I logged into the system, I casually asked who he was going with. James grinned, turned around, and pointed to a frail woman in a wheelchair.
“I’m going with that angel right over there,” he said.
I looked over and saw her—Mickey Mouse scarf wrapped around her head, an oxygen tank decorated with stickers, and a powder-blue shirt.
“That’s my Betty,” he continued. “Today is our 50th anniversary. For our first date, we went to Disneyland. The best part of that night was when we sat on Main Street, and she kissed me on the cheek.”
His voice softened as he explained that Betty had been battling liver cancer. The doctors had let her out for the day because they knew it might be her last.
At that moment, my heart sank. I knew I had to do something. As James reached for his wallet, I stopped him. “Put that away,” I said. “This is on me.”
As I walked them to the main gate, they shared their love story with me, each memory more touching than the last. When we arrived, Betty hugged me and whispered, “Thank you for giving us a moment to remember.”
James shook my hand. “There need to be more people like you in this world,” he said.
I stood back and watched as they walked toward the entrance, hand in hand. Just before they reached the tunnel leading to Main Street, James leaned over and gently kissed Betty.
It was a beautiful moment.
Weeks passed. I had moved on to the next “making magic” project when my manager handed me a letter. It was from James.
Betty had passed away the day after their visit.
In his letter, he told me about her funeral and how he was holding up. At the very end, he wrote:
“Thank you for giving Betty the best last day anyone could have. Thank you for letting us stroll down memory lane and remember how sweet our life together has been…”

As I read James’ letter, I felt a deep gratitude for him, for Betty, and for the reminder that the smallest moments often hold the most meaning. Disneyland is filled with grand attractions and dazzling shows, but its true magic lies in the quiet, heartfelt moments shared between loved ones. James and Betty’s story is one I’ll never forget—a testament to love, nostalgia, and the power of a single kiss on Main Street.
