The Spark of Imagination: A Lesson from a Disney Legend

Today, I revisit one of those cherished experiences—a transformative encounter with Disney legend Marty Sklar. His wisdom ignited my passion for creativity and inspired me to pursue my dreams. My Encounter with Marty Sklar
We all aspire to creativity, a universal trait that transcends boundaries. Whether it’s through painting, drawing, singing, photography, or graphic design, we all create in some way. Granted, not all of us are Walt Disney and won’t make the Happiest Place on Earth, but for many, he is a figure we aim to emulate. What do you aspire to? What sparks your ideas and dreams? I’ve always pondered this, mainly because of my encounter with a Disney legend. This encounter helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my life.
It was one of the busiest days at the Grand Californian, and I had been stuck behind the desk for almost four hours straight. My magic levels were running low, and I struggled to smile. While finishing up a guest reservation on the computer, I heard a kind voice say, “Excuse me, miss. Can you help me?” I saw a pair of warm eyes, an all-American smile, and a true Disney legend—Marty Sklar. Stunned, I replied, “How can I assist you, Mr. Sklar?” He explained that he had forgotten his room number, so I directed him to the right place.
As he turned to leave, he asked, “Are you happy working here?” I told him how much I loved my job and how fulfilling it was to help make people’s dreams come true. He asked, “But is this what you dream of doing?” I paused momentarily and said, “No, but it’s close.” Leaning over the desk, he offered advice I will never forget: “Do what you dream of doing—and never lose sight of that.”
A surreal moment followed as I absorbed life lessons from Marty Sklar. He shared stories about working with Walt, the early days of Disneyland, and Walt Disney World. His stories were not just about the theme parks but about the power of imagination, the importance of perseverance, and the value of creating experiences that bring joy to people’s lives. I stood there mesmerized, feeling incredibly blessed to have this moment with someone I admired greatly. Before he left, I wished him a “Grand Stay” and thanked him for the advice. He smiled and said the kindest words I have ever heard while working for Disney: “Walt would have liked you.” Then, Mr. Sklar walked away to his ceremony, where he would receive his window on Main Street.
To say I was left a little speechless would be an understatement. I constantly reflect on my moments with Mr. Sklar. It was a rare occasion to meet someone who knew Walt personally. His words of encouragement, “Do what you dream of doing-and never lose sight of that,” were like a spark that ignited my passion for writing and photography. They reminded me that I have the power to create, to influence, and to change the world with my words and photos. When I sit in front of a blank page, I can accomplish anything and change the world. I aspire to influence people, share happiness, and create emotion—just like Walt did. So, thank you, Marty, for encouraging me to pursue my dreams. You embody the principles that helped make the Disney Company and have inspired many young people to achieve their aspirations.
